About Us

We teach almost 100 pupils a week of all ages and abilities from complete beginners to highly advanced musicians and anyone in between. We also regularly host workshops for students and showcases at various music venues across the city (most recently The Cluny and Gosforth Civic Theatre), which we like to think makes us a little different! Lessons are taught at our state of the art studio in Newcastle (NE6), minutes from the city centre and easy to access with free parking on site. The studio also benefits from a waiting area for parents / siblings etc. Lessons are student led and whether your goal is to learn your favourite songs, learn more about music, pass a graded exam or become a professional musician, we can help you achieve your goals. All teachers are highly qualified, DBS checked and currently all have a master’s degree in music as a minimum. Fill out our booking enquiry form today to begin your drumming journey.

Our Team

Tom
After moving to the northeast to study a BA Hons Degree in Music at Newcastle University, he extended his studies to gain a Mmus Masters Degree in Music also from Newcastle, focusing specifically on drum kit performance and studies into drum kit pedagogy, studying with acclaimed teacher Geoffrey Hutchinson. After this time Tom began gigging professionally in an array of settings across the UK, from musical theatre gigs to rock and pop and everything in-between. Tom founded NSOD in early 2020 after years of teaching and gigging experience, looking to give North East drummers a place to expand their skill set. He also has a grade 8 in Drum Kit from Trinity College London with Distinction, an enhanced DBS check and Public Liability Insurance. Tom has vast knowledge of both Trinity College syllabus’ as well as RSL (Rockschool) and has entered multiple students from debut grades all the way to 8, with a 100% pass rate. He enjoys working with both children and adult students and currently splits his time between playing professionally and teaching / running Newcastle School of Drums.

Chris
Chris began his drumming journey in high school, immediately taking to the Trinity College London graded syllabus and receiving a string of distinctions along the way. After receiving the Exhibition Award for his grade 5 performance, Chris opted to continue his journey at Newcastle University where he gained both undergraduate (BA) and masters (MMus) degrees and studied the drums with Geoffrey Hutchinson. During his 4 years at university Chris enjoyed studying world music alongside the drum kit, taking lessons in Indian tabla and Latin percussion such as congas and timbales, and performing on stage in a variety of salsa bands as leader of the percussion section. Salsa music was the focal point of Chris’s masters degree, where he translated a range of percussion instruments, rhythms and ideologies onto the drum kit. Chris began teaching and assisting with drums at Rock Project Newcastle in 2014, working with musicians of all ages and abilities. He then joined NSOD in 2022 to further his teaching career, hoping to show the North East that music is for everyone. He enjoys working with both children and adults, and currently has a handful of students preparing for graded exams in 2023. Outside of NSOD Chris can be found playing bass guitar for North East artist Alex James or touring the country on his motorbike!

Testimonials

  • “Our daughter has been having lessons at Newcastle School of Drums for almost two years now and we have been delighted with her progress. The facilities are far above our previous experiences and tutelage comes from a highly qualified teacher. She has also been given the opportunity to attend workshops to meet other students as well as showcase her new skills at a showcase event, this was great for us to invite grandparents and other family members along to see her progress. She is now crazy about playing drums and we are excited to see what the future holds!”

  • “My little boy has been coming to Newcastle School of Drums for just over a year now. He has just turned 6 and can read music well; he has a really good understanding (for his age and ability) of music theory. Tom has developed every area of drumming with my little boy with the upmost patience. Tom cares so much about his students, it really is lovely to see. I could not be happier.”

I stumbled across this establishment during my short trip to meet my some of my friends back in 1957. As soon as I walked into Big Gazza’s School of Drums I was smacked in the face with an amazing pungent smell of the natural herbs that Big Gazza had in store. I was overwhelmed with the range of options that was available for my drum lessons, Big Gazza can teach genres from blues to Norwegian Black Metal. The owner Big Gazza came to my rescue and the customer service I received from him was unmatched, he’s a great guy and made me feel special during my visit. His warm tone, the strong Creed Aventus aroma surrounding the proximity, very strong muscular 6ft 5 presence, impeccably good looks, a gorgeous masculine cockney accent, fashionista choice of expensive clothing and his great smelling breath put me at ease and I felt comfortable, safe and tingly around him. I have been going to drum schools around the area for over 60 years now and this is up there with Philip and Sanjay’s drum school.
