Tom
After moving to the northeast to study a BA Hons Degree in Music at Newcastle University, he extended his studies to gain a Mmus Masters Degree in Music also from Newcastle, focusing specifically on drum kit performance and studies into drum kit pedagogy, studying with acclaimed teacher Geoffrey Hutchinson. After this time Tom began gigging professionally in an array of settings across the UK, from musical theatre gigs to rock and pop and everything in-between.
Tom founded NSOD in early 2020 after years of teaching and gigging experience, looking to give North East drummers a place to expand their skill set. He also has a grade 8 in Drum Kit from Trinity College London with Distinction, an enhanced DBS check and Public Liability Insurance. Tom has vast knowledge of both Trinity College syllabus’ as well as RSL (Rockschool) and has entered multiple students from debut grades all the way to 8, with a 100% pass rate. He enjoys working with both children and adult students and currently splits his time between playing professionally and teaching / running Newcastle School of Drums.
Chris
Chris began his drumming journey in high school, immediately taking to the Trinity College London graded syllabus and receiving a string of distinctions along the way. After receiving the Exhibition Award for his grade 5 performance, Chris opted to continue his journey at Newcastle University where he gained both undergraduate (BA) and masters (MMus) degrees and studied the drums with Geoffrey Hutchinson.
During his 4 years at university Chris enjoyed studying world music alongside the drum kit, taking lessons in Indian tabla and Latin percussion such as congas and timbales, and performing on stage in a variety of salsa bands as leader of the percussion section. Salsa music was the focal point of Chris’s masters degree, where he translated a range of percussion instruments, rhythms and ideologies onto the drum kit.
Chris began teaching and assisting with drums at Rock Project Newcastle in 2014, working with musicians of all ages and abilities. He then joined NSOD in 2022 to further his teaching career, hoping to show the North East that music is for everyone. He enjoys working with both children and adults, and currently has a handful of students preparing for graded exams in 2023. Outside of NSOD Chris can be found playing bass guitar for North East artist Alex James or touring the country on his motorbike!
